History of the Award

Created by VICTO CEO Edgar Comeros in 1998.

"The Tony Martin Award is named after the Canadian Missionary who spent the best years of his life in organizing and nurturing Credit Unions (Co-Operatives) in the Visayas Region"

"To qualify for this award, a leader must exemplify the values of voluntarism and has made significant contributions to the promotion and development of co-operativism and its social agenda of freedom, justice, and nationalism"

Recipients of The Tony Martin Award

Atty. Adolfo Ibanez - 1998

Lawyer, civil servant, educator and co-op leader.

Started his career at the Perpetual Help Credit Cooperative in Tacloban, Leyte as Chairman of the Board in 1976 where the PHCCI had assets of only half a million pesos.

At the end of his 22 year career, the PHCCI had assets of 100 Million pesos.

Esperanza Garcia - 2001

Wife of former Cebu Governor, "Pablo Garcia". Retired Judge.

Founder, CEO, and Chairperson of the Board of Cebu CFI (Court of First Instance) Credit Union.

Started off as a government clerk in 1969 in Cebu City, and went on to create one of the Philippines' largest Credit Unions

Shepherded the CFI from its birth on July 23, 1970, with only 29 members and assets of only 200 Pesos to assets of over 508 Million Pesos by 2002.

Judith B. Salcedo - 2002

Daughter of pioneering Credit Union educator and organizer, Ading Bernaldez

Started her career with the Guadalupe Community Credit Union as an accountant in the 1980s.

Moved to SCEGA Multi-Purpose Cooperative and took on a leadership role in 1996.

In 6 years, Judith help guide SCEGA from 10 Million pesos in assets to 35 Million pesos.
